In the early stage of the resistance war against the French, Comrade Văn Tiến Dũng’s
tactical talent was revealed through his commanding of soldiers on the battlefield.
Moreover, when he held the position of Chief of the General Staff, he and the General Staff had completed missions successfully contributing to the victory of battle at Điện Biên Phủ that “resounded throughout the five continents and was world-shaking” and forcing France to sign the Geneva Convention.
During the resistance war against the US in Zone A - Ministry of Defense, he together with Political Bureau and the Military Commission of the Party Central Committee made important decisions and was responsible for commanding many decisive campaigns such as: Trail 9 - Southern Laos (1971), Trị - Thiên (1972), Central Highlands (1975), especially he held the position of Commander of the Hồ Chí Minh Campaign - who played an
important role in the liberation of the South and the unification of Vietnam.
Comrade Văn Tiến Dũng - the longest-serving Chief of the General Staff who served in the Vietnam People’s Army for 25 years (1953-1978), has a sharp mind, practical
experience, and is a perfectly outstanding military leader in President Hồ Chí Minh times.

French delegation met Major General Văn Tiến Dũng in private and said: ''We are all
soldiers. One has right to be proud of his victory. However, when we have sat down to
negotiate, do not humiliate each other. I request that you replace Major General
De Castri's car.
Major General Văn Tiến Dũng smiled kindly. In the afternoon, Major General
Văn Tiến Dũng still used that car, but the previous words were covered with a new sentence.

In 1971 and 1972, Chief of the General Staff Văn Tiến Dũng, representative of
Political Bureau and the Military Commission of the Party Central Committee,
regularly went to major battlefields where he commanded important campaigns turning the battle
situation into a beneficial change for the Southern revolution.
In early 1971, the US government and the Republic of Vietnam’s government opened a large-scale
operation, "Lam Sơn 719", with great intentions and ambitions of: Raiding, completely intercepting
the reinforcements for the North - South strategy (Trường Sơn Trail).
