"We must rely on people because only when we rely on people will the enemy be unable to destroy us." That is what Leader Nguyễn Ái Quốc said over and over to Comrade Võ Nguyên Giáp the night before Armed Propaganda Brigade for the Liberation of Vietnam was established. From an early age, Võ Nguyên Giáp participated in the student strike at Huế’s National School, later he became a teacher who contributed to raising the patriotic spirit among students through each of his lessons. Besides that, he also struggled as a journalist with his sharp writing style. In the end, he had"chosen the right path". That path was further lit by the ideal of national liberation and class liberation when he met Leader Nguyễn Ái Quốc in Kunming - China. During the time since he returned home, he was assigned the task of forming the revolutionary armed forces. The support of the people of the ethnic groups had greatly contributed to the survival of the army from the early days. It was the army that seized the opportunity and together with the people carried out a general uprising to seize power. The establishment of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam was a significant milestone. It represents the aspiration for peace, independence and freedom of the whole nation, and also the highest glory of the soldiers of the revolutionary army who “were of ordinary origin and fought for the people”.
“Vietnamese people have made a miracle that seems impossible in the mid-twentieth century.
For the first time in history, a nation that is colonial, semi-feudal and economically underdeveloped, has defeated powerful countries mainly by its own strength, which has set an example of heroism, braveness, intelligence and talent for the world. Eternal glory will go along with Vietnamese people and the Communist Party …”.
(General Võ Nguyên Giáp’s memoirs)
“If the enemy is strong, we avoid them. If the enemy is weak, we will defeat them. Wherever there are guerrillas, it is the front, even it is behind the defence lines of enemy. To confront the enemy's advanced equipment, we have boundless heroism".
(General Võ Nguyên Giáp)
After the victory of the Việt Bắc - Autumn-Winter 1947campaign, President Hồ Chí Minh discussed the brevet promotion for some military cadres with the Central government. One of the brevets was General (for Võ Nguyên Giáp). That year, Võ Nguyên Giáp was 37 years old.
General Võ Nguyên Giáp (August 25, 1911 - October 4, 2013) is a close and excellent student of President Hồ Chí Minh; He is also considered the ‘Eldest brother’ of the Vietnam People's Army.
It was a coincidence when Nguyễn Tất Thành, a patriotic young man, left his country in 1911 and began his journey to find a way to save the country and the people. At the same time, in An Xá village, Lệ Thủy district, Quảng Bình province, Võ Nguyên Giáp was born. 29 years later, in 1940, history combined the life and career of Võ Nguyên Giáp with the leadership of Nguyễn Ái Quốc - Hồ Chí Minh (Nguyễn Tất Thành) since the meeting between Võ Nguyên Giáp and Hồ Chí Minh in Cuihu (Kunming, China).
General Võ Nguyên Giáp’s military career began in 1944 when the Armed Propaganda Brigade for the Liberation of Vietnam was established. At first, there were 34 soldiers "of ordinary origin". Later, that army, under the leadership of the Party, Hồ Chí Minh and Commander-in-Chief Võ Nguyên Giáp spent many years "fighting in the besiegement” of the enemy. They became more mature enlighted through each battle and campaign, and eventually defeated the French colonialists by the victory in Điện Biên Phủ, which “resounded throughout the five continents and was world-shaking".
After the Geneva Convention was signed, General Võ Nguyên Giáp, at the Headquarters, under the leadership of the Party, President Hồ Chí Minh and the Politburo, continued to direct the Commanders of the fronts and the army. His leadership not only contributed to foiling the political and military plots of the US and the government of the Republic of Vietnam; but also, to the victory in the liberation of the South and the unification of the country.
British military historian Peter Mac Donald wrote: "From 1944 to 1975, Võ Nguyên Giáp's life was associated with battles and victories, which made him one of the great Commanders-in-chief of all time. With 30 years of being a Commander-in-chief and nearly 50 years as a top-ranking general, he proved himself to be a man of extraordinary talent in all aspects of war. There are not many generals who can be better at combining guerrilla warfare with regular warfare than General Giáp. There has never been such a combination before".
On the contrary, the Commander-in-Chief Võ Nguyên Giáp thought differently, he said that: “The People's Army of Vietnam in both the North and the South was said by President Hồ Chí Minh to be a heroic army of a heroic nation... and that Any general, no matter what feat he achieved, his feats were just like drops of water in the sea. It was the Vietnamese people who defeated Americans. You call me a legendary general, but to me, I am just like my soldiers".
